Maple Leaf Earflap Hat

Even the youngest members of the family will be part of a Canada celebration with this crocheted hat! Pattern is for
three child sizes and features a maple leaf appliqué and pompom.

SKILL LEVEL : EASY

GAUGE: 13 dc and 7 rows = 4″ (10 cm). CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge given.

 

Directions are for size child’s small; changes for sizes medium and large are in parentheses.Hat measures 14 (16, 18)” (35.5 (40.5, 45.5) cm) in circumference.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES

Magic ring: Wrap yarn around your left middle finger twice, leaving a 6″ (15 cm) tail. Insert hook under both strands, and pull up a loop. Ch 1, and begin working directly into center of ring. This ring can be tightened later by pulling on the yarn tail.

SPECIAL STITCHES
Dc2tog (double crochet 2 together) = [Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over
and draw through 2 loops] twice, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook Picot = Ch 3, slip st in last st made just before the ch-3

HAT
With A, create a magic ring.
Round 1: Ch 1, 12 dc in ring; join with slip st in first dc – 12 dc
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 dc in each dc around; join with slip st in first dc – 24 dc
Round 3: Ch 1, [dc in next st, 2 dc in next st] 12 times; join with slip st in first dc – 36 dc
Round 4: Ch 1, [dc in 2 each of next sts, 2 dc in next st] 12 times; join with slip st in first dc – 48 dc
For 2 largest sizes only:
Next round: Ch 1, [dc in each of next 0 (7, 3) sts, 2 dc in next st] 0 (8, 12) times, join with slip st in first dc – 48 (54, 60) dc.
For all sizes:
Next 5 (5, 6) rounds: Ch 1, dc in each st around; slip st to join – 48 (54, 60) dc.

Earflaps
Row 1: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc here and throughout), dc2tog over next 2 sts, dc in each of next 4 sts, dc2tog over next 2
sts, dc in next st, turn – 8 dc.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn – 8 sc.
Row 3: Ch 2, dc2tog over next 2 sts, dc in each of next 2 sts, dc2tog over next 2 sts, dc in last st, turn – 6 dc.
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn – 6 sc.
Row 5: Ch 2, [dc2tog over next 2 sts] twice, dc in last st, turn – 4 sc.
Row 6: Ch 1, sc in each st across – 4 sc.

Fasten off.
With earflap facing up, skip 20 (22, 24) sts to the left of last earflap st on brim, and join B with slip st in next st.
Work other Earflap the same way. Fasten off.

FINISHING
Border for Cap Version
Next 2 rounds: Ch 1, sc in each st around.
Fasten off.
Border for Earflap Version Join B with slip st in center back of hat.
Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each st and 4 sc in each sc-row edge around, join with slip st in first sc.
Fasten off.
