ABBREVIATIONS
Beg = Beginning Ch = Chain(s)
Dc = Double crochet Rep = Repeat
Rnd(s) = Round(s) Sc = Single crochet
Sl st = Slip stitch Sp(s) = Space(s)
St(s) = Stitch(es) Tog = Together
Yoh = Yarn over hook
Split sc = Insert hook between 2 strands of vertical V in the middle of sc instead of usual way. Draw up a loop. Yoh and draw through 2 loops on hook.
SIZES
Hat: To fit child 2/4 yrs (6/8 yrs) yrs old.
Cowl: 24 (26)” [61 (66) cm] around x 10 (12)” [25.5 (30.5) cm] deep.
GAUGE
13 split sc and 16 rows = 4″ [10 cm] on larger hook.
INSTRUCTIONS
The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger size the instructions will be written thus ( ). When only one number is given, it applies to both sizes. For ease in working, circle all numbers pertaining to your size
HAT
With smaller hook and MC, ch 9 (11).
1st row: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
1 sc in each ch to end of ch. Turn. 8 (10) sc.
2nd row: Ch 1. Working in back loops only, 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn.
Rep 2nd row until work from beg measures 18 (20)” [45.5 (51) cm].
With larger hook, join last row and 1st row tog with 1 row of sc to form tube.
Note: Join all rnds with sl st to first split sc.
Foundation rnd: (RS). Ch 1. Working along side edge of ribbing, work 59 (65) sc evenly around. Join. Place marker on last st at end of each rnd and move marker at end of each rnd.
1st rnd: Ch 1. 1 split sc in each sc around. Join.
Rep last rnd until work from beg measures 8 (8½)” [20.5 (21.5) cm]. Fasten off.
FINISHING
Inner Ears (make 2).
With A and smaller hook, ch 4.
1st row: 5 dc in 4th ch from hook. Turn.
2nd row: Ch 2. 2 dc in first sc. 1 dc in each of next 3 dc. 2 dc in last dc. Fasten off.
Sew Inner Ears to Hat as shown in photo.
COWL
Note: Join all rnds with sl st to first sc/split sc.
With larger hook and MC, ch 78 (86). Join with sl st to first ch to form a ring, taking care not to twist chain.
1st rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in same sp as sl st. 1 sc in each ch around. Join. Place marker on last st at end of each rnd and move marker up on subsequent rnds.
2nd rnd: Ch 1. 1 split sc in each st around. Join.
Rep 2nd rnd until work from beg measures 10 (12)” [25.5 (30.5)cm]. Fasten off.
FINISHING
Whiskers (make 6).
With white yarn and smaller hook, ch 15.
1st row: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and each ch to end of ch. Fasten off.
Nose
With A and smaller hook, ch 4.
1st row: 5 dc in 4th ch from hook. Turn.
2nd row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each dc to end of row. Fasten off.
Sew Whiskers and Nose to Hat as
shown in photo.
