Knit Bear Hat and Diaper

SKILL LEVEL : INTERMEDIATE

GAUGE: 18 sts = 4″ [10 cm]; 22 rows = 4″ [10 cm] in Stockinette stitch using larger needles. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.

This colorful knit set is perfect for baby to wear in photos to share! This yarn has been tested for harmful substances, so you can confidently use next to baby’s skin. Teddy face embroidery adds a loving touch, but is optional.

Directions are for size 3 months; changes for 6 months and 12 months are in parentheses.
Diaper Cover Waist: 15 (16, 18)” [38 (40.5, 46) cm]Hat circumference at bottom edge: 15 (16, 17)” [38 (40.5, 43) cm]

NOTES
Diaper Cover is worked in two pieces from waist down to crotch. Back piece
is wider than Front piece and is folded over sides. Hat is worked from top of
crown down to lower edge. Ears are worked separately and sewn on after
Hat is finished.

kfb: Knit 1 front and back (increase) Knit next st, then knit it through back loop.

PATTERN STITCHES
K1, p1 Rib (multiple of 2 sts)
Row 1: [K1, p1] to end of row.
Repeat Row 1 for K1, p1 rib.

DIAPER COVER
Back
With smaller needles and B, cast on 50 (54, 58) sts.
Work in K1, p1 rib for 1¼” [3 cm], end with a wrong side row.
Knit 1 row on right side. Change to larger needles and A, purl 1
row. Work in St st until piece measures 4 (4½, 5)” [10 (11.5, 12.5) cm] from beginning, end with a wrong side row.
Shape Legs
Next Row: K19 (21, 23) and slip to a stitch holder, k12 for crotch, slip remaining 19 (21, 23) sts to a stitch holder st holder.

Crotch
Working on Crotch sts only, purl 1 row – 12 sts.
For 3 and 6 Months Sizes Only
Next Row: K2tog, k8, k2tog – 10 (10) sts.
For 12 Month Size Only
Next Row: Knit – (12) sts.
For All Sizes
Work in St st until piece measures 5 (6, 7)” [12.5 (15, 18) cm] from beginning,
end with a wrong side row – 10 (10, 12) sts.
Bind off.

FRONT
With smaller needles and B, cast on 15 (17, 20) sts.
Work in K1, p1 rib for 1¼” [3 cm], end with a wrong side row.
Knit 1 row on right side row. Change to larger needles and A, purl 1 row.
Work in St st until piece measures 4 (4½, 5)” [10 (11.5, 12.5) cm] from beginning,
end with a wrong side row. Place marker on either edge of last row worked.

Shape Legs
Next Row: K1, k2tog, k9 (11, 14), k2tog, k1 – 13 (15, 18) sts.
Next Row: Purl.
Next Row: K1, k2tog, k7 (9, 12), k2tog, k1 – 11 (13, 16) sts.
Next Row: Purl.

For 3 Months Size Only
Next Row: K1, k2tog, knit to end of row – 10 sts.
Next Row: Purl.
For 6 and 12 Months Sizes Only
Next Row: K1, k2tog, k(7, 10), k2tog, k1 – (11, 14) sts.

FINISHING
Sew Front and Back pieces together along crotch seam.
Right Leg Cuff
With right side facing ready to work along right leg opening, larger needle and A, knit across 19 (21, 23) sts from stitch holder, pick up and knit 15 (17, 19) sts evenly spaced along crotch edge of Back and Front pieces to stitch marker on Front – 34 (38, 42) sts. Purl 1 row on wrong side. Change to smaller needles and B, knit 1 row. Work in K1, p 1 rib for 4 rows. Bind off.

Left Leg Cuff
With right side facing ready to work along left leg opening and larger needle,
join A at stitch marker on Front, pick up and knit 15 (17, 19) sts evenly spaced
along crotch edge of Front and Back pieces, knit across 19 (21, 23) sts from
stitch holder – 34 (38, 42) sts. Work as for opposite leg opening. Sew seams of Cuffs and Front and Back pieces, matching colors. Weave in ends.

BEAR HAT
With larger needles and B, cast on 6 sts. Row 1: [Kfb] 6 times – 12 sts.
Row 2 and All Wrong Side Rows: Purl. Row 3: [Kfb] 12 times – 24 sts.
Row 5: [K3, kfb] 6 times – 30 sts. Row 7: [K4, kfb] 6 times – 36 sts.
Row 9: [K5, kfb] 6 times – 42 sts. Row 11: [K6, kfb] 6 times – 48 sts.
Row 13: [K7, kfb] 6 times – 54 sts.Row 15: [K8, kfb] 6 times – 60 sts.
Row 17: [K9, kfb] 6 times – 66 sts.Row 19: [K15, kfb] 4 times, k2 – 70 sts.
For 6 and 12 Months Sizes Only
Row 21: [K16, kfb] 4 times, k2 – (74, 74)sts.
For 12 Months Size Only
Row 21: [K17, kfb] 4 times, k2 – (78) sts.
For All Sizes
Work in St st until hat measures 3 (3½,4)” [7.5 (9, 10) cm] from beginning, end
with a wrong side row.

Next Row (Right Side): Change to smaller needles and A, knit. Work in K1, p1, rib until piece measures 5 (5½, 6)” [12.5 (14, 15) cm] from beginning. Bind off in rib.

FINISHING
Sew back seam. With A, embroider a little bear face using satin st for eyes and nose and straight sts for mouth. Ear (make 2) With B, cast on 6 sts.
Row 1: K2, [kfb] twice, k2 – 8 sts.
Row 2: Purl.
Row 3: Knit.
Row 4: Purl.
Row 5: [K2tog] 4 times – 4 sts.
Row 6: [P2tog] twice – 2 sts.
Row 7: [Kfb] twice – 4 sts.
Row 8: Purl.
Row 9: [Kfb] 4 times – 8 sts.
Row 10: Purl.
Row 11: Knit.
Row 12: P2, [p2tog] twice, p2 – 6 sts.
Bind off.
Fold in half along Row 6 and sew side seams. Sew one Ear on either side of head. Weave in ends.
