There are a gazillion ways to knit. Knitting is a folk art, so how you knit reflects who taught you, where you live, and often a little bit of ingenuity. This is how I knit. I use two methods, depending on the project. But I never combine the two within a project (except for now, just to show you). I usually pick one method and stick with it for the entire project. The first picture is how I learned to knit colorwork. Actually, the first thing I ever knit was colorwork, so this is literally how I learned to knit (thank you very much Elizabeth Zimmerman). I hold the contrasting color in my left hand and the main color in my right. Incidentally, if I am knitting with only one color, I always knit continentally. Slide through to see the other way I knit, with two strands in my left hand. When I do this, I put the contrasting color on my index finger and the main color on my middle finger. When I am knitting with the contrasting color, I drop my middle finger and knit like I normally do, and I pop up the main color whenever I need it. I think that there are advantages to both of these methods and use both all the time. I learned to knit with one color in each hand, and think it’s a great way for beginners to learn how to wrangle two strands at once (and best of all learn two knitting traditions at once). I also think learning to work with the yarn in either hand is great for your knitting dexterity. It comes in handy when you least expect it. Knitting with both strands in the left hand is great for when you need to change yarn dominance in the same row. I think this method might be faster for me, but it takes a bit of coordination. There are different ways to catch floats with each method. I can show you how I do that, too - if you’d like. When I knit with 3 colors, I combine these two methods and knit with two strands in my left hand and the main color in my right. Happy colorwork knitting !
