Easy Baby Hat Knitting Pattern

Size: 6 months

Gauge: 22 stitches = 4″

Using a long-tail cast on, cast on 72 stitches on your circular needles in your main hat yarn color of All Things You Baby Acrylic. Join to knit in the round and k1, p1 in a rib stitch for 5 rounds. Then knit all stitches for 10 rounds. Switch to the flower yarn color and knit all stitches for 3 rounds to make the contrast band. Then switch back to the main hat yarn color and knit all rounds until the hat is about 4 1/2 inches long.

Decrease (distribute your stitches onto 3 double pointed needles and knit with the fourth):

Round 1: (k6, k2tog) and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 2: Knit all stitches

Round 3: (k5, k2tog) and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 4: Knit all stitches

Round 5 :(k4, k2tog) and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 6: Use the fourth double pointed needle to knit all stitches for one round.

Round 7: (k3, k2tog) and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 8: Knit all stitches to the end of the round

Round 9: (k2, k2tog) and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 10: Knit all stitches to the end of the round

Round 11: (k1, k2tog) and repeat to the end of the round.

Round 12: Knit all stitches to the end of the round

Round 13: k2tog and repeat to the end of the round.

Cut yarn, pull through loops and close. Weave in ends.

To knit the flower:

Using your straight needles, cast on 70 stitches in your All Things You Baby Acrylic flower yarn color.

Row 1: (k3, k2tog, k2tog, k3) repeat to the end of the row

Row 2: (p1, cast off 6 stitches using a purl cast off*) repeat to the end of the row.

Row 3: switch to yellow yarn and knit all stitches

Row 4: p2tog and repeat to the end of the row.

Cut the yellow yarn leaving a long tail and thread the tail onto your yarn needle. Then thread the yarn needle through the remaining stitches and pull to close the center of the flower.

Tie a knot on the back of the flower and leave this long tail to sew the flower to the hat. Weave in the rest of the ends and use the original cast on tail end to stitch the first and last flower petal together to keep the flower closed.

*to do a purl cast off (also known as a purl bind off), purl one stitch, then purl a second stitch and pass that second stitch over the first and off the needle. You have cast off one stitch.

To knit the leaves (make 2):

Using the Silly Sprite All Things You Baby Acrylic yarn and your straight needles, cast on 4 stitches. Leave a long tail to stitch the leaves to the flower.

Rows 1 -2: knit all stitches

Row 3: kfb, k2, kfb

Row 4-11: knit all stitches

Row 12: k2tog, k2, ssk

Row 13: k2tog, ssk

Row 14: k2tog

Cut your yarn, pull through loop to close and weave in that end on the back of the leaf.

To assemble the hat:

Use their long cast on tails to stitch the leaves together and to the back of the flower. Then use the long yellow cast off tail from the flower to stitch the entire flower (including the leaves) to the hat along the contrast band. Weave in all remaining ends.
